Aigle - Conférence
In line with the exhibition at the Espace Graffenried, a conference on Glaciers and global warming will be given.
Glaciers are hydroclimatic systems. They are "fed" by winter snow, which gradually turns into ice, and loses substance as snow and ice melt. They are therefore privileged witnesses of climate change.
After explaining the water balance of glaciers and its relationship to climate, this conference will discuss different examples of glacier evolution in relation to past, present and future climates. In particular, the retreat of the Rhone glacier into the Chablais plain after the last Ice Age, the advance of glaciers during the Petit Age Glaciaire and the Giétro disaster of 1818, the current retreat of alpine glaciers, such as the Diablerets massif, and finally the projections concerning the future of Swiss glaciers will be discussed.
