For the third edition of Ailyos, Fernand Greco presents his work.
This is a sacred Maya Tree whose branches grow in a perpendicular plane. In the Maya Culture, the three worlds ( celestial, earthly and underground) were related by an Axis symbolized by the World Tree. Its roots were said to extend deep down into the Earth, its trunk was rising from the ground and its branches were high up in the clouds and the sky. The first celestial glimmer touched the Tree and thus doing, lit the path to escape Darkness and reach Light. The World Tree symbolizes the link between the sky and the earth, the combination of celestial and telluric forces. Those forces can flow vertically in both directions. The Maya citizen was first entitled to explore the underworld before striving to reach the celestial universe. He was thus expected to experience the different scales of the World Axis. The Tree also emphasizes the fact that the 3 worlds worked together as part of a whole called World Tree. The golden hands echo the golden aspect of the rooster on bell towers.
