From Aigle, climb all the way up to Leysin via the charming hamlets of Fontanney, Drapel and Veyges. The ascent takes you through the Chablais vineyards, mountain pastures and along the trailways that the « Leysenouds » have been using for years. Come back down using the picturesque rack and pinion train « Aigle-Leysin »
From the train station, go along the station road (rue de la Gare) by following the « Aigle-Leysin » train tracks as far as the market place (main trunk road, BCV bank). Take a left and continue to the Château roundabout then go over the bridge which crosses the Grande-Eau.
Wind your way through this pretty Fountain district until you come to the end of the paved street, then attack the ascent which will take you to the delightful little village of Fontanney. You need to allow some 45 minutes from the train station to Fontanney during which time you can admire the splendid views of the vineyards and Aigle Château which dates back to the 12th Century.
After Fontanney, take the path to your left at point 584, go under the tracks of the « Aigle-Leysin » railway and then join up with the hamlet of Drapel. After that you should allow around 1h15 to reach Veyges. The trail climbs steeply at this point through the forest, at the foot of the cliffs of the « Efflot de Veyges ». In olden times, it was one of the trailways regularly used by « Leysenouds » either on foot or on the back of a donkey. Veyges makes for a welcome resting point. Here the vineyards give way to pastures.
Cross the road lined with chalets until you reach a tarmac road which will bring you all the way up to Leysin. After about 30 minutes climb, this road will join up with another which then leads directly to the Leysin village train station.
It’s well worth taking a stroll through the streets of old Leysin so that you can admire the age-old chalets and the village temple : continue along the road from the train station towards the centre of the village.
It’s also possible to take the cablecar up to the Berneuse panoramic revolving restaurant (opening dates listed on www.leysin.ch): from the village station allow around 25 minutes to get to the cablecar station.
