Do a circuit tour of the Mont d’Or by taking the Path of the Chamois. This is a route for those who want to do a long distance walk without too much of a climb. The fauna and flora encountered along the way give this trail an interesting taste of the wild.
The setting off point is on the corner of the Tourist Office building in the centre of Les Mosses. From here, take the main road (direction La Comballaz) passing the Fontaines Hotel on the way. After the hotel, take a right on the road which starts to climb. Follow this road which at first is quite a gentle slope and then becomes steeper until you reach the fork in the walking trails (1515m). Take the path to your left and climb through the pastures for 30 minutes. Pass by a 1st chalet then a 2nd building on the tarmac road that you will need to follow until you reach the Sonna road. Go over the turnstile opposite, to the right of a small alpine pasture (1626m).
The trail then climbs through a pasture and takes you to Larzey forest, a really wild area rich in wild and abundant flora. When you exit the forest, go in front of the Vent-Debout chalet and carry straight on through the fields on a straight track that starts off flat, then descends sharply before becoming flat again and wider when you get to the stony forest trail. This will then take you up to the crossing with the Pierre-du-Moëllé road. At this point (1561m), hike up to your right and follow the road as far as the restaurant on the Pierre-du-Moëllé pass. From there, take the ascending trail, opposite the restaurant.
This trail, called the « Path of the Chamois » continues along the left and meets up with the village of La Lécherette 1h30 later. The trail goes through forests and pastures. It’s around about now that you should start to listen out for the sound of clattering hooves on stone and to observe the wildlife. It’s not unusual to spot a chamois here. Once you reach the heights of the military base, carry on downhill through more pastures until you get to the military road.
Follow this for 5 minutes by taking a right and then take another right before the bridge. Take the « Anteinettes » path through a pasture until you link up with a wide pathway on the edge of the forest. Follow this. When you leave the forest, the path climbs up to the right and joins up with the stone track of the Arsat. Follow this as far as the skilift which you will need to cross over. This new track takes you through wet pastures and should be followed for quarter of an hour. Once again on a tarmac road, continue until you reach the main road. At this point, take a right and walk along for another 10 minutes until you get back to the centre of Les Mosses.
Option : It is possible to start this circuit route by setting off from La Lécherette.
Note : the path of the chamois is open at weekends and 7/7 days from the beginning of July to mid August.
