The Domaine des Moines is located in Villeneuve. On the shores of Lake Léman some 3km from Chillon Château, its low altitude (390m) and the reverberations from the lake create an environment conducive to wine cultivation.
Among the Diserens, the know-how has been transmitted from father to son since 1870. Gustave, Georges, Claude, Norbert and today Serge - an HES engineer from Changins - have perpetuated the family tradition while innovating. The Domaine des Moines owes its name to the road on which it nestles, on the heights of Villeneuve. A place where it is good to taste the specialities grown on the 5.5 ha of the Villeneuve appellation. Chasselas, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Gamaret, Garanoir, Diolinoir, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernets, Malbec come from a
twenty or so plots that benefit from different terroirs and altitudes. There are also two plots in Leytron and Saillon, where the Terra Solis Cabernet Merlot and the Terra Solis Syrah were born. The latter was awarded the title of best Syrah in the world in 2016.
If 90% of the quality is due to the vine itself, the winemaker also plays an important role in getting the most out of each vintage. The vinification process marries tradition with the contemporary, allowing the terroir to do all the talking. The Domaine des Moines produces wines from old vines on lees, subtly releasing their full potential. More besides, certain reds are aged in barrels (for up to 30 months) so as to structure the wine for long term cellaring. It’s a method of wine making that has been successfully practised since 1985.
